The curiosity to see through, to listen through doors. A reproduction of an illustration by Gustave Doré from the book Les Nouveaux Contes de Fées; the drawings have been altered, and the door motif appears in a cartoonified form. The hands hold eyes and refer to Saint Lucy, who gave her eyes to God.

When one seeks out a secret and breaks the silence, what may await is punishment and damnation. Here, there is no real choice: the young girl is compelled by the need to know. We watch her through the mirror as she stands at a turning point, on the verge of knowing.
